So it has been reported that with a win over Roy Nelson that Daniel Cormier will request an immediate shot at the LHW crown against the winner of the Jones/Gustafsson. There are so many questions when it comes to Cormier getting the shot; does Cormier deserve the shot, what will the weight cut be like for him and can he win a fight against Jones, presuming he wins of course.

If there is anything we have learned over the past 7-8 months it is that it doesn’t matter much what anyone deserves when it comes to Dana and the UFC brass. We have watched fighter after fighter jump the line and get what they don’t necessarily deserve; Frankie Edgar, Chael Sonnen, Nick Diaz, they were going to do it for Pettis and now it looks like Cormier will be the next. So that is a moot point in my eyes we are past the days of earning things in MMA. It is about money and what fight Dana can best promote.

Cormier has been preparing to make the drop for sometime now and was quoted before the Frank Mir fight as saying that he was weighing in on fight day at about 235, so I would have to imagine that in the time since the fight he has been going through further preparations and will probably be about 225-230 for his last fight at heavyweight against Nelson. I would think he would probably weigh in at about 220 maybe a little bit more before he begins his cut to 205.

With his history of tough weight cuts in the Olympics he has probably brought in some really solid nutritionists and guys that are really good with making weight, like maybe a Mike Dolce type of guy. I don’t think it will be much of a problem for Cormier.

The biggest question of all can Cormier beat Jon Jones (if he beats Gustafsson) in my opinion—absolutely. Whether he does or not only time will tell. Jones has a really long reach and uses it really well, but there are a lot of things that I think go in Cormier’s favour if this fight should happen:

  •  Wrestling
  •  Cormier’s wrestling could easily be the best in the UFC, he is certainly the most decorated. It will be Cormier’s low centre of gravity and sheer power that will pose problems for Jones. Cormier will be able to get low and get in on Jones’ legs and if he can get in Jones will have a tough time stopping him from scoring the takedown.
  •  Experience at Heavyweight
  •  Cormier has been in their with some top-tier heavyweights such as Barnett, Mir, and Antonio Silva, all top ten guys and all guys weighing in at 250 to 300lbs he has beat all of them, he can take a punch. Jones is not known for his punching power he will in all likelihood be unable to hurt, rock or back Cormier up with one or two punches. Cormier will be able and willing to take a punch to get inside, where the advantage is his.
  •  Power
  •  Well Cormier will likely lose some power with the weight drop, he should still have an advantage over Jones. Cormier should be able to do more damage if he can get inside the reach of Jones and do some dirty boxing, digging into the body of Jones that will be crucial as Jones may have an advantage in endurance. Cormier may also be able to do some damage with one shot which I don’t think Jon will be able to do.

There are a lot of things that Cormier will have to watch out for against Jones. As I stated earlier Jones may have an advantage with his endurance. Cormier will have to really prepare for the speed and athleticism of Jones he hasn’t seen a lot of that fighting bigger guys at heavyweight.

The kicking ability of Jones above all else with those long legs, I would have to think that beating up Cormier’s legs would be high on his priority list in order to help take some explosiveness out of Cormier’s takedown attempts. He is going to have to figure out a way to avoid taking a lot of damage to the legs, in order to stay strong enough throughout a five round fight.

This will be a highly anticipated fight and both fighters bring a lot to the table. I think Cormier can win but only time will tell. The only thing I know for sure is that I will be tuned in and enjoying every minute of it.
