UFC on Fox 8 is set to go down tomorrow-in Seattle. There are a number of great fights I am really looking forward to, but none more than Rory MacDonald and Jake Ellenberger.

There has been a lot of hype built around this fights with an entertaining war of words between the two. With both fighters promising to not only win the fight but also finish it in devastating fashion. It is going to be a great fight and possibly fight of the night. Ellenberger has a great deal of power and MacDonald displays a very solid all around game.

For Rory, this is what I have been waiting for, I know the kid has a lot of talent but he needs a win over a legit top ten welterweight before I can believe the hype that surrounds him. His two most notable victories come over natural lightweights, Nate Diaz and BJ Penn. He has managed to move his way right up the welterweight rankings into near title contention without beating a legit top 10 fighter. That is kind of Bizarre to me but it is what it is.

Jake has clearly fought the tougher competition, the only loss on his record in the last four years is to Martin Kampmann, a fight that he was controlling until he was caught in round two and TKO’d. Ellenberger has some really impressive stats given the competition he has faced, he has avoided and impressive 93% of his opponent’s takedown attempts, while completing 68% of his own. The only thing as impressive as that, is that Rory’s numbers for the same stats are virtually identical.

That being said I think that this is going to be Rory’s coming out party. His all around skill set is going to pose a lot of problems for Jake. Rory is enjoying the best of both worlds right now, he is young but also very experienced, having started his career when he was just 16. That blend of youth, natural talent, experience, (but not too much to the point where he has taken a ton of punishment) and his ability to mix things up will be his biggest advantages.  This is the fight that is going to propel him into the top of the division.

Either way this going to be a great fight and the one that I am looking forward to the most on the Fox 8 card. Best of luck to both fighters!

Wow, I wasn’t aware that Ellenbergers takedown defense was that high! I predicted that Rory would get some big takedowns but maybe not now. Even though Rory lost to Condit, that fight has sold me on his talent. He’s gotten a ton better since then and I think he’ll prove it tonight. Ellenberger has a serious chance of delivering a KO at anytime but I think Rory toughs it out for a decision. Nice write-up.
